As music have developed overtime there has been many ways of releasing it. From mixtapes, to EPs, LPs, records, and Albums. The question is, do you know the difference?
A mixtape has original and cover songs or songs done over the instrumentals of other songs.Typically it is used to build up clout for an upcoming album or to create awareness for an artist. A mixtape can have whole songs contributed by a number of artists. In the past a mixtape originated in the time of compact cassettes when the consumer could record his/her own choice of songs and play or circulate it without any commercial benefit.
Then there is an extended play record, often referred to as an EP, it is a musical recording that contains more tracks than a single, but is usually unqualified as an album or LP. EP is between a single and a full CD or LP; it’s too short to be a full CD and too long to be a single. It usually has 3-5 tracks.
LP stands for Long Play, and is another word for ‘album’. It’s used to define the length of a product, it’s longer then a single, and also longer then a EP album.
An album, depending on the length of the tracks have 8-12 songs, it is what the artist or record label makes which costs money and is available as a commercial product it could be released as vinyl, CD, cassette,or even a digital download.
The technical names of each product can be questioned. The best way to sum it up would to be if its FREE then its considered to be a Single or a Mixtape and if you have to pay for it then its an Album. One artist that does a great job at delivering FREE music to his fans is Chance The Rapper. Though every project that he has released is larger then an EP and many feel that he should get his money’s worth, the truth is they are all considered to be Mixtapes. Another artist Future you can stream many of Future’s projects freely there are a few of his projects that are actually albums, because you have to pay for them. Beast Mode 2 the most recent project released by Future is a mixtape and is now available for streaming on all music platforms.
