In the MLK biopic 'Selma', R&B singer Ledisi portrays the gospel singer Mahalia Jackson and performed the song "Take My Hand, Percious Lord". But during the 2015 Grammy Awards, Beyonce asked John Legend and Common to intro the performance of the song during the awards show instead of Ledisi. This brought much controversy from fans of the song and Ledisi, Common and John Legend alike. When ledisi was asked about her being substitued for Beyonce, she responded with class by saying:
"I don't have a clue," Ledisi admitted, when asked why she hadn't been invited to sing "Take My Hand." But, smoothly, she continued:
"The song, 'Take My Hand, Precious Lord,' has been going on forever," she said. "It started with the queen, Mahalia. The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin (who sang the song at Jackson's funeral, in 1972). Then I was able to portray and sing my version of the song. And now we have Beyonce."
"I'm a part of history," she said. "Look at it like that, instead of looking at it as a negative. To me it's a great, great honor to be a part of a legacy of a great song, by Thomas Dorsey."
John Legend responded to why Beyonce performed the song "Take My Hand" instead of Ledisi:
“We were actually approached by Beyonce. She wanted to do an intro to our performance and introduce us," Legend told Kevin. "You don’t really say no to Beyonce if she asks to perform with you.".
